Blue and white porcelain is known as the “national porcelain” in China and abroad, and was introduced to Japan in the middle of the 14th century. However, compared to celadon or Tenmoku, which are also Karamono utensils, the presence of blue and white porcelain in the Japanese tea ceremony seems to have a less prominent presence. A study of tea books and tea ceremony records shows that, blue and white porcelain was used in different forms of tea ceremony at different stages of its development, undergoing a long period of disesteem during the Muromachi period, initial acceptance during the Sengoku period and short-lived popularity in the early Edo period. This paper focuses on the history of the Japanese tea ceremony from the Muromachi period to the Edo period, trying to sort out the specific use of blue and white porcelain in the Japanese tea ceremony, exploring the reasons for the above situation from multiple dimensions. This investigation analyzes the multi-faceted nature of the Japanese tea ceremony, seeking insights into the important role of Karamono Utensils in the development of the Japanese tea ceremony.
