Centering around Chinese Pu’er tea, Lisa See’s The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane tells the story of how the Akha mother Li-yan reunites with her American daughter Haley after a twenty-year separation, unfolding across three decades since the launch of China’s Reform and Opening Up. In the novel, tea serves as a metaphor for Li-yan’s ethnic cultural identity, a catalyst for Haley’s journey of self-discovery and the construction of her multicultural identity, and a bond connecting nature, culture, and women. Based on the theories of“thing” narratives, this paper explores the role tea plays in constructing characters’ identities from three aspects: cultural symbolism, agency, and ontology of non-human matters. It is argued that by resorting to “thing”, the novel reveals Lisa See’s reflections on the identity dilemmas of female ethnic individuals in a transnational, trans-ethnic, and trans-cultural context, as well as her pursuit of a multicultural identity.
