As a concrete manifestation of Chinese-style modernization in contemporary rural China, rural revitalization aligns with the developmental trajectory and characteristics of national modernization. However, many rural areas, reliant primarily on external forces for modernization, inevitably encounter tensions and conflicts that extend beyond material and institutional factors. This study examines a rural revitalization initiative involving new media empowerment in D Township, located on China's southwestern frontier.By analyzing this case, the paper explores the frictions that arise when new media technologies—symbolizing modernization—are introduced into a relatively traditional community, confronting local beliefs and perceptions. The findings reveal a significant“fault line”between the realities of D Township as a direct-transition area(a region that moved directly from a primitive society to socialism, bypassing intermediate stages)and the imperatives of modernization. This gap extends beyond material conditions, permeating ideological and cultural dimensions, forming what can be described as a“fissure”of modernity. These fissures, particularly evident in concepts of distribution and exchange, reflect the broader realities and challenges of Chinese-style modernization.
