The reproductive process in animals is a life activity that requires significant amounts of energy. To investigate the potential differences in energy metabolism between the male and female clams Meretrix petechialis after spawning,we monitored their physiological indicators at regular intervals and analyzed the glycogen and glucose levels in the foot tissues,as well as the activities of key rate-limiting enzymes involved in sugar metabolism. Our findings revealed that the oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, feeding, and fecal excretion rates after spawning were higher in female clams compared to males, indicating an enhanced reproductive cost and increased energy intake to restore the physiological state. Both females and males consistently exhibited oxygen–nitrogen ratios>24 after spawning, signifying carbohydrates and fats as the primary metabolic substrates.Glucose levels elevated rapidly after spawning and then gradually returned to normal, indicating dynamic changes and recovery processes of sugar compounds after spawning. The activity of hexokinase in males and females remained relatively stable before and after spawning. However, that of phosphofructokinase in females declined markedly after spawning, suggesting a specific suppression of carbohydrate metabolism. These findings provide insights into the differential impacts of reproduction on energy metabolism between genders and have implications for sustainable clam aquaculture.
