An experiment involving 60 growing pigs (19.26±1.26)kg was conducted to determine the effect of the addition of Cu (4.6, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mg/kg) on the growth performance and serum hormone level. Pigs were weighed and pen feed intakes were recorded once every twenty days, blood samples were collected for serum hormone analysis on the day just before the trial and the 20th, 40th, 60th and 80th day of the trial. The results of the feeding trial showed that pigs supplemented with 150mg/kg, 250 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg copper in basic diet increased average daily gain (ADG)( P <0.05) and decreased feed:gain (F/G) ratio ( P <0.05) on the growing stages (20~60 kg), different levels of copper addition have no effect on ADG and F/G on the finishing stages (60~90 kg). On the whole stages, the group of pigs supplemented with 200 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg copper grew fastest. In addition, the dynamic analysis of serum hormone level indicated that feeding high-Cu diet tended to increase serum hormone level, hence promoting pig growth. The influences of Cu on serum hormone levels were independent of F/G or growth in the experiment, which indicated a direct action of Cu on the growth regulatory system.
