Up to now, there is only one selective medium for the airborne Strep.saliva-rius so far as we know, which was developped by williams and Hirch and is called S1. According to the results of our tests, the inhibitory activity of this medium is too strong for the growth of Strep, salivarius.Besides, it needs a relatively high content of normal horse serum, which is rather expensive, difficult to obtain and causes the preparation as well as preservation troublesome. All of these will hinder the medium to be used in fields for extensive investigation. So we developped a new economic, simple and selective medium called NSS.It is demonstrated with our experiments in laboratory and on the fields that this new medium can inhibit the growth of most miscellaneous airborne bacteria, including moulds, collected from the atmosphere, and on this medium the collected Strep, salivarius can characteristic colonies distingushable from those of other organisms. The agreement rate of the presumative Strep, salivarius primarily selected according to the characteristic colonies with the standard strain of Strep, salivarius is 88.3% as verified by microscopic and biochemical tests. This study may offer a part of the technical basis for studying air hygienic indicator of respiratory contagious diseases.
