摘　　要：伊弗雷姆·凯勃特一直被认为是奥尼尔剧作中“最令人难忘的人物”,一个坚信“在石头中看到上帝”的清教徒。本文从清教主义理念对凯勃特的影响、资本的原始积累与凯勃特一家在农庄问题上的斗争、凯勃特畸形的农庄情愫等三个方面对凯勃特这一形象进行初步的探索 ,从而揭示《榆树下的欲望》Ephraim Cabot, a monomaniacal Puritan and who dedicated his entire life to 'God in the stones', is unquestionably one of the most remarkable literary images created by Eugene O 'Neill. Not many criticisms about his personalities and tragedies, however, can be found in the field of O 'Neill Studies. This thesis aims at a brief survey of how Puritanism suffocated Ephraim with desires of lust and substance, of how he and his family members struggled violently to acquire property, and of how his aberrant personalities supported him to grab his possessions, via which causes of the tragedies taken place in the play can be recognized.
