The purpose of the study was to observe the effectiveness of magnetic acupuncture-massage on prevention and treatment of motion sickness (MS). 16 young men were tested in a parallel swing (0.24Hz) to induce MS after head-down tilt (-10°) for l h in the gondola. Each of the subjects experienced two tests: control test and protection test. Self-comparison, Latin-square and double blind techniques were used. The interval between two tests was 5-7 days. The motion sickness stablity index (MSSI) was defined by scoring points according to both duration endured on the swing and severity of symptoms observed. Electrogastrogram (EGG) and skin temperature were also recorded. The results obtained showed that the magnetic acupuncture-massage could increase the stability of motion sickness significantly in head-down position. The average increase of MSSI was 28.3 (p<0.01) and the total effectiveness rate of protection was 62.5. The effectiveness rate was 71.4 in subjects with moderate or higher stability of motion sickness. The amplitude of EGG tends to increase and the skin temprature tends to decrease when symptoms of motion sickness appeared, They could be taken as supplementary indices for evaluation of motion sickness.
