摘　　要：美国梦萦绕了一代又一代的美国人 ,许多人为这个梦想努力过、奋斗过 ,同时也失望过、伤心过 ,这些是 2 0世纪初美国作家们追逐的一个主题。菲茨杰拉德在小说《大人物盖茨比》中运用象征的手法 ,对小说主人公盖茨比的追求进行了多层次多角度的描写 ,不但赋予作品以丰富的历史内容 ,也使得小说峰回路转 ,余味无穷。American dream haunts Americans generation after generation. Many strive for it only to be disappointed, which is the subject frequently portrayed by American writers. With the application of simbolization in his novel The Great Gatsby , F. Scott. Fitzgerald gives a thorough description of the pursuit of the protagonist Gatsby multi-dimentionally, which leaves a lasting and pleasant aftertaste on the readers as well as imbuing the novel with rich and colorful historical ground.
