Objective: To study the influences of astragulus(黄芪) on regional cerebral blood flow velocity(rCBFV) in rats with acute cerebral injury. Methods: The rats were randomly divided into three groups: normal control group(n=5), normal saline control group(n=35) and astragulus group(n=35). Local traumatic brain injury model was extablished by the improved Feeney's method. The rCBFV was measured at 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 24 and 48 hours in normal saline control and astragulus group after brain injury in the rats, and compared to that of the normal control. The influences of astragulus on rCBFV were observed. Results: The rCBFVwere decreased obviously in early stage after acute traumatic brain injury and reached the lowest level at 24 hours, gradually recoved at 45 hours. Astragulus significantly inhibited the decrease of rCBFV and the difference was significant compared to the normal saline control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Astragulus can increase the rCBFV in rats, the mechanism is related to the neuro-vascular protection of astrogulus.
