摘 要:当人类走进现代,精神领域随物质世界膨胀式发展,群体的分化使个人的存在表现为不同的彼此分裂的角色和身份,由此产生了自我认同的需要,而现实的迷茫与失落又将人们送回了原来的起点:从自然中寻找依托,从未来寻找归宿。这就是西方文学与宗教的契合点。对于西方文学,本就与宗教同源同流,无论是人文主义、启蒙运动,还是科技革命,都未曾从根本上改变西方人对上帝的信仰。在《巴黎圣母院》、《红字》和《荆棘鸟》中,我们沿着人物走过的路径,探寻在现代意识(现代性)产生、发展和成熟的进程中,西方宗教观念与教士形象及形象塑造的关系,清楚地看到西方宗教传统的延续依然如故,精神诉求的基本品格并没有质的改变,有的只是形式表征的无限丰富而已。Christianity presupposes that we are degenerated creatures and the story of Adam and Eve is the story of ours,yet it calls on us to surmount it.In the modern ages,human spiritual world develops with the physical world in an expansive manner.The disintegration of our society results in separated roles and identities of each individual and there aries a need for selfidentification.Whereas human beings,confused and frustrated by the reality,are again sent back to their departure point.Seeking support from the nature and pursuing a destination in the future become the interface of western literature and religion,which actually share the same origin.Neither Humanism,nor Enlightenment movement or technological revolution had changed the westerners beliefs in God.From NotreDame de Paris,The Scarlet Letter to The Thorn Birds,following the course of the development of modernism,well discover the relationship between western religious beliefs and clergy characters.Well find that the western religious traditions remain unchanged,nor is the spiritual pursuit.What has changed is only the infinity form representations.
