Purpose: To examine the correlation between lipoprotein (a) [LP (a)] and members of metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM). Methods: We utilized cross-sectional study to investigate the level of LP (a) of 1040 patients with type 2 DM in Shanghai, and adopt spearman single-agent and partial correlation to analyze the correlation between LP (a) and metabolic syndrome in type 2 DM, then grouped the subjects according to magnitude of accompanying members of metabolic syndrome, and compared the significance of the level of LP (a) among groups. Results: Level of LP (a) of patients with type 2 DM increased with the accretion of uric acid, urine albumin excretion, fasting glucose, low density lipoprotein, decreased with the promotion of insulin sensitivity. Moreover, the more the magnitude of accompanying members, the higher the level of LP (a). Conclusions: Intimate relationships existed between LP (a) and metabolic syndrome; detection of level of LP (a) of patients with type 2 DM might be conducive to determining the degree of metabolic syndrome. Lowering of LP (a) would benefit to prevent the occurrence of chronic complications of type 2 DM.
