This study is designed to test the effect of heat shock response on rat heart after an acute bout exercise. Male rats are randomly assigned to one of the four experimental groups (n=8/group): normothermic sedentary (NS), heat shock response sedentary (HS), normothermic exercise (NE), and heat shock response exercise (HE). Rats in the NS and HS groups are exposed to 15 minutes of whole body hyperthermia (colonic temperature 41℃-41.5℃). Twenty-four hours after the heat shock response, HE and NE groups are subjected to an acute bout exercise. Rat hearts are removed after exercise; the relative levels of heat shock protein 72(HSP72), the activity of SOD and the concentration of MDA are analyzed. The following results are obtained: 1) The relative levels of HSP72 in HS group are significantly higher than those in NS group(P<0.01); the activity of SOD is increased and the concentration of MDA is decreased(P>0.05). 2) Compared with NE group, the activity of SOD in HE group is elevated(P>0.05). The concentration of MDA in HE group is significantly lower than that in NS group(P<0.01). The results suggest that heat shock response can protect against free radical injury in rat hearts deduced by an acute bout exercise.
