The eco tourism will become the trend of the global tourism industry in the 21st century. The canyon, with large number of ecologic resources, is an ideal destination to develop eco tourism because of its advantages in both environment and resource. China, as a country abundant in the canyons with variety of type, large quantity and wide distribution, has a broad prospect in developing eco tourism based on canyons. However, so far there is rare successful case in this country. Besides, the relevant research and case study are also far from enough. Therefore, the authors will discuss three aspects towards canyon eco tourism development in China. First, the authors make comments on the status in quo of the development of the canyons developed as eco tourism destination. Second, the paper pays much attention to analyze three practical developing patterns applied to the canyons in South Anhui province and West Zhejiang province, which are typical for the research purpose. To further the discussion, the authors try to find out what factors determine pattern choosing, how these factors work, and how to make the last choice under this framework. Then, the authors point out the strategies to develop tourism in the canyon areas: to choose the eco tourism developing pattern on condition of resource and location, together with the hypothesis of government, investor, market and uncertain factors; to adopt different developing patterns in three typical canyon clusters. At last, based on the precious discussion, some suggestions are made for the tourism developers check. The purpose of this paper is to promote the eco tourism development of the canyons in China, as well as to protect the canyons and related environment by minimizing the impact resulting from tourism development.
