Objective: To obtain the synaptic data on the neural pathway for feeding behaviors by revealing the synaptic connections on the projection neurons from infralimbic lobe (IL) to nucleus accumbens shell (AcbSh) in the rats. Methods: HRP was delivered into the rat AcbSh, and the retrogradely transported HRP in the IL were reacted with TMB. The morphology and distribution of the HRP labelled neurons in the IL were observed under light microscopy, and synapses on the perikarya of these labelled neurons were examined with electron microscopy. Results: The retrogradely labelled neurons containing HRP/TMB reaction product were observed throughout the IL. The perikarya of these labelled neurons showed basic features of the pyramidal cell, and measured approximately 15 μm×25 μm. Under electron microscopy, 3-5 synapses, were observed in each profile of the labelled perikaryon in the IL. Conclusion: In the feeding neural pathway, the neurons in the IL innervate the AcbSh, while the neurons in the IL themselves are controlled by inhibitory information through symmetric synapses.
