Based on cognitive metonymy theory, this paper analyzes discursive strategies on Trump’s energy political speech. The study finds that, on referential metonymy, Trump’s use of “federal government management” instead of “this administration” is a clever way to circumvent conflict and legitimize his decision to boost conventional energy. Besides, he also uses “all the other countries” to refer to “the other countries involved in the Paris Agreement”, which put other countries into opposing camps, in addition, portrayed them negatively and to legitimize policies by provoking the audience’s emotion. What’s more, he uses a metonymy of “American workers for energy workers” to highlight the important group and encourages them to support his energy policies by emphasizing how much their lives would be improved. In terms of time metonymy, Trump uses “tomorrow” as a time metonymy to create a vision and expectation of an imminent bright future to legitimize his energy policy. This paper makes a critical metonymy analysis of political discourse to help us understand the implicit meaning behind political discourse.
