摘　　要：存在主义是西方一种现代非理性主义哲学思潮,对二战后法国以至整个欧洲的文学创作产生了广泛而深刻的影响。英国当代作家约翰•福尔斯的小说《法国中尉的女人》自出版以来一直被视为存在主义哲学的文学诠释和形象图解。本文旨在探讨约翰•福尔斯在这部小说中的存在主义思想和自由观,分析女主人公萨拉的存在与自由,阐明福尔斯创作魅力的内在动因及其对当代小说发展的重要启示。Existentialism is a modern irrational philosophical trend in the West that has had a widespread and profound influence on post-World War II literary production in France and throughout Eu-rope. Since its publication, John Fowles’s novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman has been regarded as a literary interpretation and figurative illustration of existentialist philosophy. This article aims to explore John Fowles’s existentialist ideas and freedom view in this novel, to analyze the existence and freedom of Sarah, and to elucidate the intrinsic motivation of Fowles’s creative appeal and its important inspiration for the development of contemporary novels.
