Chinese noun predicate sentences are widely recognized by the domestic academic community as a significant feature that distinguishes Chinese from Indo European languages such as English, and are currently discussed in many grammar textbooks and academic works. However, through reviewing relevant literature, we found that there is still a lack of systematic and comprehensive research on the origin and development of the view that noun predicate sentences are special sentence structures. In fact, the understanding of noun predicate sentences in academia has gone through four stages: sprouting, exploration, dispute, and clarification. It has evolved from unconscious mention to conscious discussion, and from “judgment sentences without conjunctions” to an independent special sentence structure. This is the result of continuous exploration, expansion, and gradual summarization and improvement by scholars throughout history.
