As a multimodal discourse targeting young readers aged 3~12, children’s picture books primarily utilize various modes such as text and images, alongside symbols like facial expressions, body movements, actions, colors and postures to construct multimodal emotional metaphors. These approaches reduce the abstractness of emotions and help children acquire empathetic emotional experiences. This study takes the children’s life-education narrative picture book The Scar as its research object. It systematically examines the different types of emotional metaphors—such as anger, sadness and love—present in the book, as well as the multimodal strategies employed in their construction. The study further explores the overall construction of the multimodal emotional metaphor space within the book. The aim is to assist picture book authors in understanding the methods and pathways for constructing emotional metaphors, enabling them to create higher-quality children’s picture books. Ultimately, this will help young readers better understand emotions and gain profound and meaningful emotional experiences.
