Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, drawing from the author’s own life experiences and set against the backdrop of the Victorian era and Modernism, deeply investigates the living conditions and life trajectories of two female characters during a time of transition between old and new. As a pioneering feminist, Woolf’s work continually seeks to trace and reconstruct female history, reflecting the intertextuality between New Historicist literature and historical context. In the novel, she imaginatively creates two women in contrasting circumstances—Lily Briscoe and Mrs. Ramsay—grounded in her personal experiences, vividly portraying the differences and struggles between the awakened women yearning for freedom and their traditional counterparts. This essay examines the images of Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe by analyzing the influence of Woolf’s personal life and the historical and cultural context surrounding the creation of her works on the writing of the novel.
