摘 要:Oscar Fingal O ‘Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 – 1900) is an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerousplays and one novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.Known for his biting wit,he became one of the most successfulplaywrights of the late Victorian era in London,and one of the greatest celebrities of his day.As a spokesmanfor aestheticism,he believes that beauty is the essence of art and life should imitate art.Salome is one of Wilde’s important plays,in which he fully practices his idea of aestheticism.Therefore,aestheticism is the key tounderstanding this one-act play.This thesis is made up of three parts:the first part briefly introduces theaesthetic movement; the second part focuses on Oscar Wilde and his aesthetic beliefs; the last part which isalso the most important one discusses the play Salome and its aesthetic values.
