摘　　要：现实主义是 19世纪英国小说的主要创作手法。托马斯·哈代作为当时的重要作家 ,则竭力避免采用现实主义手法 ,其作品表现出一种迥异的风格 ,这种风格在《卡斯特桥市长》中表现得尤为显著 :他利用偶然、巧合、突变作为阐释自己哲学思想的重要手段 ;用象征和暗示 ,用寓言性的描述创造一种由必然性所决定的悲剧。《卡斯特桥市长》与英国其他现实主义小说的种种不同 。Realism was the leading writing style of the nineteenth century English novel. Thomas Hardy, one of the major novelists, however, made efforts not to follow it but to create a unique one of his own, which illustrates itself clearly in Mayor of Casterbridge :Coincidence, sudden change is an important method to interprete his philosophy; Symbol, hint, allegorical description is used to create a tragedy determined by certainty..., on which the special status and effect of Mayor of Casterbridge in the history of English novels is based.
