Objective To investigate whether gastric contractions can be identified from the cutaneous electrogastrogram(EGG). Methods Simultaneous measurements of gastric myoelectrical and manometric activities were made before and after intraveneous infusion of erythromycin in fasting state in anaesthetized dogs. The correlation between EGG and gastric contractions was analysed. Results (1)Dominant frequency of EGG in baseline study in dogs was 4.2~5.1 cpm. (2) Amplitude (power) and dominant power instable coefficent (DPIC) of EGG significantly increased while gastric contractions were occurring after intraveneous administration of erythromycin ( P <0.01 and P <0.05), as compared with saline control group, but no changes of dominant frequency of EGG was found. (3) EGG parameters mentioned above obviously lowered with pretreatment of Atropine which inhibited erythromycin induced gastric contractions ( P <0.01 and P <0.05). (4)When correlation analysis was conducted between amplitude of EGG and corresponding amplitude of gastric contractions, it was found that the increases in the amplitude of EGG were significantly associated with the increased strenghth of gastric contractility ( r =0.698, P < 0.01). Conclusions The cutaneous electrogastrogram can reflect gastric contractions. The EGG may be taken as an important and useful tool for predicting gastric motiltiy.
