摘  要:孩儿茶是一外来物质,其称谓多样,如乌爹泥、孩儿香、孩儿土等。它主要是作为药用,但它还可入茶、做香料、咀嚼槟榔等。孩儿茶产自于印度西南沿海、苏门答腊至中南半岛一带,同时也是榜葛剌、满刺加、爪哇、暹罗等国的朝贡物品之一。它在宋代已广为人们所认识,但《本草纲目》将其列为新增药物值得商榷。同时本文还对孩儿茶的其他方面进行了考察,以期揭示其背后所隐藏的中外文化交流之图景。Catechu is an astringent extract produced by boiling the Acadia catechu wood in water and evaporating the resulting brew.It was widely used by the coastal states of Asia as a medicine,and could also be made into tea,fragrances and betel palm.Catechu was mainly produced on the southwest coast of India,Sumatra and Southeast Asia.As it was sent to China frequently as one of the tribute commodities from the different rulers in Bengal,Malacca and Java,it was thus recorded under different names in Chinese historical documents.Based on a careful reading and textual analysis of historical documents, this article examines the definitions of catechu contained in Chinese historical records,the origins of catechu and the possible period of its imports and dissemination into imperial China,in the hope to highlight the significance of cuhural exchanges between China and other parts of Asian Archipelago in history.
