摘　　要：读了本期《外语教学与研究》刊出的一组有关社会语言学的文章,觉得还有两点可说,作为补注写在下面。 一、乔姆斯基是瞧不起社会语言学的,为什么?乔的这一瞧不起的态度最能从他于1977年和罗纳夫人(Mitsou Ronat)的谈话中看出来。谈话记录包括很多方面,其中有几处涉及社会语言学。这里能够看出乔本人对语言学最本质的看法,即语言学是什么。This is an attempt to get two questions answered regarding sociolinguistics: 1) why didChomsky (as he certainly did in Language and Responsibility, 1979) think so slightingly ofsociolingistics and -- need sociolinguistics bother? and 2) seeing taht 'language in society' and'the sociology of language' were alternatively used for sociolinguistics, which of the two wouldbe a better term? Answer to 1): Chomsky was solely concerned with the explanation of languageas a mechanism of the mind and he had good reason to do so. Sociolinguistics on the other handaddresses itself to some thing difeerent-to the description of language in all its social variations.Chomsky's contempt for sociolinguistics shows a trait of mind which can be understood thoughnot necessarily admired. Sociolinguistics needn't be intimidated into theorizing the Chomskyanway, just because Chomsky says it has no theory. Better be an honest investigator than animitative theorizer. As to 2), the writer thinks 'sociology of language' a more inclusive termsince it is the varying social contexts, not language itself, which initially attract the investigator,and form the main interest of his work.
