The end of George Eliot's novel The Mill on the Floss has been one of the focuses of scholars' criticism. Why do the brother and sister become reconciled in the 'flood'? This question has caught the attention of many scholars home and abroad. However, there has not been a definite answer to it.By putting the novel under the background of industrialization and combining the archetypal meaning of the 'flood',we can find that the 'flood' at the end of the novel symbolizes the stormy and heroic industrial revolution which brought great damage and destruction to human beings but whose objective regenerating effect created for human beings the opportunity of rebirth.
