This paper tends to interpret George Eliot's works in combination with her biography from the feminist perspective, and analyze her contradictory views on women's role. On the one hand, George Eliot breaks the silence of the female in the male-dominating society and awakens the feminist consciousness which, for long, has supported women in winning the rights for receiving education and entering job market. On the other hand, she emphasizes women's self-sacrifice in marriage to fulfill men's ambition instead of the absolute equality between men and women. She defines women as men's assistants. The dichotomies in George Eliot's attitudes on women are the product of her times and the traditional English society, which reflects both her hope that men and women might jointly construct a happy human society and her embarrassment and helplessness as a wanderer on the edge of feminism.
