Objective:To investigate the functional characteritics of masseter and temporalis anterior muscle by testing the central biting electromyography(EMG) activity in the condition of unilateral occlusal contact. Methods:with EM2 electromyograph equipment bilateral masseter and temporalis-anterior muscles of 9 university male students were tested under the following two conditions:① biting maximally in mandibular intercuspal position(ICP); ②biting a peice of cotton maximally in ICP between upper and lower dentition on one side ,leaving the other side disoccluded. Resuts:During ICP maximal biting no difference was found in EMG activity between bilateral temporalis-anterior muscles or between bilateral masseters (P>0.05).During unilateral contact maximal biting EMG activity of the temporalis-anterior muscle on the bitting-side was higher than that on the disoccluded side(P<0.05); that of masseter muscle between two sides showed no significant difference (P>0.05).Conclusion: Vertical distance occlusion contact may affect the EMG activity of temporalis-anterior muscle but not on that of masseter muscle during the central biting.
