Black American fictions of the 20 th century show a distinct line of thought development. “Fictions of protest” by earlier stage writers such as Toomer and Wright mainly reveal the racial oppression and prejudice in American society and disclose the harms they have inflicted on the black soul. Works by Ellison and Walker in the middle stage focus on the loss of individuality and self of blacks in contemporary society, and explore ways as to how blacks can gain their independence and how black women can realize their emancipation. In the later stage, Haley and Morrison strive to look for the cultural roots of black Americans, calling for the awakening of cultural consciousness of black nationalities.
