Objective The preventive effects of spirulina on dimethyl-benzanthracene (DMBA) induced oral carcinogenesis in syrian golden hamster were studied. Methods The hamsters were divided into four groups, the positive control group (the left buccal pouches of animals were topically treated with 0.5% DMBA in acetone three times per week for 14 weeks),two spirulina treated groups (oral administration spirulina 0.3g/kg and 1.0g/kg every day before starting the DMBA treatment and until the end of the expriment) and the negative control group (acetone applied topically). Results Oral admistration of spirulina 0.3g/kg and 1.0g/kg could reduce micronuclei formation and labeling index of proliferating cell nuclea antigen (PCNA) in oral mucosa cells induced by DMBA,but had no effect on the level of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression. The average number of tumor per hamster was reduced by 39.8% and 35% respectively, and the mean tumor burden was reduced by 59.8% and 74.2% respectively, compared with the positive control group. Conclusion Spirulina could effectively inhibit DMBA-induced oral carcinogenesis in hamsters.Protecting DNA damage and suppression of cell proliferation are considered as important mechanisms of the anticarcinogenic effects of the spirulina.
