AIM: To evaluate the clinical significance of TGF-β2's variation in the aque ous humor of diabetic patients, the role of TGF-β2 in the mechanism of neovascu larization and the relationship between TGF-β2 and VEGF. · METHODS: The aqueous humor specimens of diabetic cataract patients with retin opathy but without eyeground changes were collected, and those of cataract patie nts without diabetes mellitus were selected as the controls. Then the contents o f TGF-β2 and VEGF in the aqueous humor were determined by employing the ELISA t echnique. · RESULTS: Compared with the controls, the content of VEGF in the aqueous humor of diabetic patients increases significantly and grows with the development of diabetic retinopathy. However, there is no significant change of the content of TGF-β2 in the aqueous humor of diabetic patients without eyeground changes in c omparison with the normal. The content of TGF-β2 declines in simple diabetic re tinopathy and increases in proliferative diabetic retinopathy. · CONCLUSION: TGF-β2 plays an important role in the development of diabetic re tinopathy and there is coordination between TGF-β2 and VEGF at the advanced sta ge of diabetic retinopathy. ·
