Objective To investigate the role of the peripheral nerves in the regulation of paraventricular nucleus (PVN) on gastric ischemia-reperfusion injury (GI-RI). Methods Male SD rats were used to form GI-RI models by clamping the celiac artery for 30 minutes followed by reperfusion for 1 hour after removing the clamp. The regulatory mechanism of the PVN elicited by nuclear electric stimulation was examined under various conditions of the vagua and sympathetic nerve. Results When the PVN was stimulated after vagotomy and sympathectomy, the extent of GI-RI was reduced by 69.02% and 55.16% respectively (P<0.01). When β-R antagonist propranolol was given iv, the protrctive effect of of PVN stimulation on GI-RI would be abolished and the lesion became increased by 211.7%. Intravenous injection of M-R antagonist atropine orα-R antagonist phentolamine did not alter the protective effect of PVN stimulation on GI-RI. Conclusion The protective effect of PVN on GI-RI might be mediated through the vagus and sympathetic nerve.
