摘　　要：这是本文作者 2 0 0 2年 1 0月 2 2日在中国社会科学院世界历史研究所讲座的摘要 ,他介绍了西方城市史研究中的主要理论。第一部分从功能上对城市进行了区分 ;第二部分介绍了西方城市史学中最有影响的理论和学派。尽管这些理论都有时间和地域的局限 ,但是 ,在我们对城市进行研究时 。The article summarizes the main visual angles of studies and main theories in urban studies in the west. It gives the representative books with these theories as well. According to the functions cities could be seen as a systems , an economic engine, communications of network, contested space, built environment, personality, stage and etc. The normative theories in this field include looking at the city as a symbol of the cosmos, center of the world, machine, organism, constellation and etc. Even though the shortcomings of these theories are obvious, however they are important organizing principles for us to understand cities.
