On the Formal Base and Evidential Base of Interpretation

摘　　要：The theory of interpretation put forward by Davidson in terms of the category “radical interpretation” plays a significant role in Davidson’s program. The key point of the theory is to illuminate the indispensable factors involved in understanding a speaker’s speech behavior. Davidson constructs his theory of interpretation on particular formal base and evidential base. That is to say, Davidson establishes the formal base of the theory of interpretation in terms of a new modification of Tarski’s Convention T. Moreover, putting on the empirical limitation to the theory of truth, Davidson argues that the attitude of held true sentences is the evidential base of the theory of interpretation. In this paper we analyze the argument which Davidson establishes the two bases, and try to explain the philosophical significance of Davidson’s theory of interpretation.The theory of interpretation put forward by Davidson in terms of the category “radical interpretation” plays a significant role in Davidson’s program.
