Objective: To study the angioarchitecture and aging changes of microvasculature in rat corpus striatum, providing reference for further understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of certain cerebrovascular diseases. Methods:The angioarchitecture of corpus striatum microvasculature in 3 different age groups of rat (1-2, 6-7, >24 months old) were studied and determined by ink-gelatin injection, corrosion casts, transparency and electron microscope technique. Results:The rat corpus striatum was mainly supplied by recurrent vessels from anterior cerebral artery, branches from the internal carotid artery and lenticulostriate artery. The main arteries set off central branches at right angle. The vascular network of caudatoputamen (CP) was dense. The vascular network and neurons formed honeycomb structures. The vascular network was thin and loose in globus pallidus (GP), and the thinnest and loosest was in internal capsule. The bounds among these 3 portions were clear. The aging changes of the rat corpus striatum capillary included basement membranes thickening, endothelial cells degeneration and organellae loss and atrophy. Conclusion:The arterial arrangement in rat corpus striatum is similar to that in human. The special morphology and aging changes of these vessels may have important implications for pathogenesis of cerebrovascular diseases in this region.
