Objective To study plasma endothlin (ET) changes in patients with acute cerebral infarction and their correlations with prognosis. [Method] The courses of the 78 patients with acute cerebral infarction are all within 48 hours. Their scorings of infarct sizes and neurotic deficiencies are divided into mild, moderate and severe groups, respectively. Their plasma endothelin levels were determined with 3 d and 10 d, and deficiencies on the function of nerves scored on their admission date and after admission. The plasma endothelin levels of 25 healthy examiners were taken as normal controls. [Results] The endothelin levels of the three groups all increased. Compared with the controls, significant differences were observed in the moderate and severe groups(P<0.01). In scoring deficiencies on the function of nerves, the higher the scores were, the higher the ET levels were. [Conclusion] The decrease of the plasma endothlin (ET) levels in patients with acute cerebral infarction has a correlation with the degrees and progress of the patients' disease conditions. Determining the ET levels of the patients in their acute stage offers a new approach to diagnose and prognose the disease.
