Objective:To determine the expression of E-cadherin-γ-catenin complexes and Apoptotic Index (AI) in bladder cancer and their relations to malignancy, infiltration and recurrence. Methods:An avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique and TUNEL were used to examine the expression of E-cad herinγ-catenin complexes and AI in 81 TCC biopsies.Results:①Decreased expression of E-cadherinγ-catenin complexes correlated with both high grade and stage (P<(0.05)). Moreover, abnormal E-CD expression correlated well with the high recurrence rate(P<(0.01)). ②AI correlated with both high grade and stage (P<(0.05)),AI in tumor tissues of patients with recurrence was significantly higher than that in those without recurrence(P<(0.05)). ③AI in tissues of patients with abnormal E-CD expression was significantly higher than that in those with normal E-CD expression. Statistical analysis revealed an inverse correlation between E-cadherinγ-catenin complexes and AI.Conclusions:Detection of E-cadherinγ-catenin complexes expression and AI might have practical significance in assessing the biological features of bladder cancer. E-cadherinγ-catenin complexes might be an important suppressor in some apoptosis pathways.
