Sublime was an important category in the history of aesthetics. Kant perfected the concept of the sublime in respect of its connotation in his philosophy and aesthetics. According to Kant, the sublime lies in the subject's moral feeling. The esthetical judgment of the sublime is, therefore, based on the measurement of 'to be a human being'. This is the ground for the aesthetical transcendence and aesthetical freedom. The process from displeasure to pleasure in feeling sublime is also a process of improving life. Kant's view of the sublime is significant for developing modern aesthetics and surmounting the predicament of modern culture.
