The paper, based on explaining diverging coherence, aims at exploring the relationship between coherence and misunderstanding. Both misunderstanding and coherence are hearer-oriented and comprehension-based. By diverging coherence is meant the situation where the coherence attributed by hearers to the discourse fails to match the coherence expected by speakers, which makes misunderstanding in the discourse less easily identified. The existence of diverging coherence further proves that coherence is a matter of degree rather than that of degree, and that there is no clear-cut line between coherence and non_coherence. If diverging coherence is considered as one form of coherence, discourse coherence cannot ensure no misunderstanding. Discourse coherence is not sufficient but necessary for correct understanding.
