Objective To investigate the expression of epidermal growth factorEGF in spared dorsal root ganglionDRG after partial dorsal root rhizotomy. Methods Twenty adult cats were divided into four groups. Three groups were subjected to bilateral spared root rhizotomy L1~L5 L7~S2 DRGs were sectioned L6 DRG was spared. On the 3rd day 7th day and 14th day after partial dorsal rhizotomy the animals of these groups and another group  intact animals as reference group were sacrificed. The spared DRGs L6 were taken and made into frozen sections and were stained under the same condition using specific EGF antibody1200 by immunohistochemical ABC method. The EGF positive total large medium-small sized neurons in spared DRG were counted respectively. Results All of the EGF positive total large and medium-small sized neurons decreased greatly at 3th days P<0.05 and close to the normal level at 14th daysP>0.05. At 7th days compared with normal group positive total neurons have no difference large neurons increase and medium-small sized neurons continue to decrease. Conclusions partial dorsal root rhizotomy have different influence on the expression of EGF in spared DRG of the total large and medium-small sized neurons.
