AbstractTwenty-eight New Zealand white rabbits wererandomly divided into experimental group(n=20) andcontrol group (n=8).In the experimental group, thebilateral common carotid arteries were ligated, theblood flow of right common carotid artery was reversedinto the right cephalic internal jugular vein distal to thefacial common vein, and the arterial and venous bloodwere obtained from the cerebral circulation pre andpostoperatively for blood gasanalysis. While in the con-trol group, only the bilateral common carotid arterieswere ligated. Both experimental group and controlgroup were further divided equally into 4 subgroups forhistological study at the 48th hour and on the 14th dayafter operatiOn,cerebral angiography and ink injectionon the 14th day of postoperation, and long survival ob-servation, respectively,The results showed that allthe animals survived. In the experimental group, theblood gas analysis revealed no statistical difference(P>0.05) between pre-and postoperation. The cerebralcirculation was rich and patent, and the cerebral cellswere normal. In the control group, however, the cere-bral blood flow was inadequate and the cerebral cellsnecrosed extensively. It is concluded that the adequaterevascularization of ischemic brain can be created bythe arteriovenous reversal.
