Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of human herpesvirus -6's( HHV -6 )infection and its corre lation to oral malignancy. Methods: Samples of saliva, peripheral blood mononuclear cells ( PBMCs), cancer tissue and normal tissue collected from 40 patients with oral malignancy and 40 healthy young adults were tested for human herpesvirus -6 by nested PCR assays. Results: HHV -6 DNA positive rates were 85.0% and 45.0% in the salivas of patients and control group respectively, 67.5% and 22.5% in the PBMCs of patients and control group respectively, both of which demonstrated statistical difference. In both groups HHV -6 DNA positive rates in saliva were higher than those in PBMCs. The positive rate in cancer tissues(78.95% ) was significantly higher than that of normal tissues( 10.53% ). Conclusion: The result confirms that saliva gland is the latenty and proliferation position of HHV - 6 and saliva is the predominant transmission route of HHV -6. The infection of HHV -6 correlates to oral malignancy, which suggests HHV -6 may play a role in the occurrence and cell transformation of malignancy.
