Objectives To explore the difference and its reasons of mental health level between nurses in high risk departments and the normal group, and to determine the relationship between nurses' mental health level and coping style. Method The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL -90) and the Coping Style Questionnaire were used to investigate 50 nurses in high risk departments, and then compared the results with that of normal group. Results The total mean score of SCL -90 and each factor score in nurses from high risk departments were significantly higher than that of normal group( P 〈 0.05 or P 〈 0, 01 ). There was no significant difference in their coping styles between the two gronps. The total mean score of SCL -90 was negatively correlated with mature type of coping, and positively correlated with immature type and the mixed type of coping. Conclusion The mental health level of the nurses who worked in high risk departments was lower than that of the normal group mainly due to long period of overload working stress. Coping style could influence their stress response, which manifested that immature and mixed coping style could aggravate the stress response, while mature coping style could alleviate stress response and was beneficial to improve nurses' mental adaptability.
