Objective To investigate ERG alterations induced by changes in body temperature in the rat. Methods Twenty-five twelve-week-old SD rats were used in the study and were divided into 5 goups (each group included 5 animals). Rectal temperature was measured with a precise thermometer and taken as the body temperature. In experiment 1, the body temperature was mauntained at (35±1)℃, and the ERC, s elicited by a constant stimulus intensity were recoiled every 10 minutes. In experiment2, the body temperature was lowered in five steps from 3.5℃ to30 ℃, 25 ℃, and20 ℃. ERGs elicited by different stimulus intensities were recorded at each body temperate level. Results In experiment 1, the mesa amplitudes and implicit times of both the a- and b-waves and the OPs O2-wave did not change significantly. In experiment 2, the amplitude of the ERG decreased significantly with a decrease in body tempersture, and the implicit times of the ERG were prolonged with a decrease in body temperature. Conclusion Body temperature greatly affects the amplitude and timing of the ERG. Great care must be taken to maintain a body temperature as nomal as possible when using the ERG to evaluate the retina, especially in small animals such as the rat.
