Objective To investigate the changes in microecology in gingival sulcus of abutment teeth after wearing clasps and the difference in influence of wrought wire clasps and casting clasps on sulcus flora. Methods Ten patients who were ready to accept removable partial denture were selected and divided into 2 groups. One group used wrought wire clasps and the other used casting clasps. Then at the following four time points : before denture was installed, one week, one month and three months after wearing the clasps, the total cultivable flora were counted and the percentages of the G-bacteria in the gingival sulcus of the abutment teeth were calculated. Results The wearing of both types of clasps promoted the accumulation of microflora in abutment gingival sulcus. The percentage of G-bacteria detected in gingival sulcus increased significantly (P 〈0.05 ). The increasement of G-bacteria caused by wrought wire clasps was higher than that caused by casting clasps one month after wearing. However, the increasement of G- bacteria three months after installation between wrought wire clasps and casting clasps was not different. Conclusion The wearing of the removable partial denture enhanced the accumulation of G- bacteria in gingival sulcus of abutment teeth.
