Objective:To investigate the mechanism of monitoring and processing conflict in human brain. Methods:The event related potential (ERP) was determined in 16 subjects. Flanker task in a visual S1- S2 matching paradigm was used to examine event-related potentials. ERPs were recorded respectively in the above-mentioned conditions, while subjects were engaged in a visual discrimination task by pressing specified key. Results:The negativity was elicited by the incompatible Flanker stimulus as well as by the mismatch stimulus. The negativity distributed maximally over the fronto-central site. The map of low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) for the conflict negativity suggests that the medial frontal cortex, especially anterior cingulate cortex, may be involved in conflict detection and resolution. Conclusions:The conflict of mismatch (early conflict) as well as Flanker (late conflict) can both evoke negativity, and further confirm that the negativity does relate to the detecting and processing of various kinds of cgnflict either from the perception level or the decision-making level. A conflict detecting and processing system exists in human brain, which may be located in medial frontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex.
