This paper explores the similarities and differences between the semantic theories of Wierzbicka's Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) and Jackendoff's Conceptual Structure from perspective of semantic primitives. Despite the fact that both theories are dedicated to the identifying of semantic primitives, there exist three fundamental differences: 1) Jackendoff's conceptual structure, represented by technical terms, abstract features, or logical symbols, is an abstract metalanguage involving the decoding of the complicated formula into plain language, while Wierzbicka's semantic primitives are all represented by simple, indefinable and intuitively clear everyday words; 2) Wierzbicka's approach is based directly on empirical evidence through cross-linguistic investigations, while Jackendoff's approach is far less empirical; and 3) Wierzbicka's NSM primitives are universal and testable and, therefore, can manifest themselves equally in all natural languages, while Jackendoff's conceptual primitives don't possess such a feature.
