Objective To investigate the relationships between expressions of β-catenin and clinicopathological features in human gastric cancers. Methods The immunohistochemical staining of β-catenin was performed using EnVision method in 120 specimens : 60 from patients with early gastric cancer and 60 from patients with advanced gastric cancer. Results The positive rate of β- catenin expression in early gastric cancer was 63.3%, with significant differences between two types (intestinal and diffuse) gastric cancer, with or without lymph node metastasis and among different differentiation types(P 〈 0.05),but without significant differences between different depths of invasion (P 〉0.05). In the advanced gastric cancer, the positive rate of β-catenin expression was 55.0%, with significant differences between different differentiation types and with or without lymph node metastasis(P〈0.01), but not between different histological types, with and without peritoneal spreading and distant metastasis (P 〉0.05). Conclusion The reduced expression of β-catenin is correlated with the development and progression of gastric cancer.
