Objective: To evaluate the model of intracerebral capsule hemorrhage with somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), and observe the development of cerebral edema during different periods after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in rats. Methods: The model of ICH was established with the stereotactic method. Regional cerebral morphology, SEP, nervous symptoms, brain water content were measured during different period before and after operation. Results: Compared with the sham group, latency of SEP were prolonged (P〈0.05) in experiment group(6 h, 12 h, 1 d, 5 d)and the brain water content increased(P〈0.05); the latency of SEP (2 d, 3 d) were prolonged significantly (P〈0.01) and brain water content increased significantly (P〈0.01); but the latency of SEP (7 d) were shortened (P〉0.05) and brain water content decreased (P 〉0.05). Regional cerebral morphology and nervous symptoms altered correspondingly. Conclusion: SEP is the most objective index to evaluate the model of intracerebral capsule hemorrhage in rats with the stereotactic method. The development of cerebral edema after ICH is a consecutive course. There is a directive relationship between the change of SEP and development of cerebral edema.
