Objective To explore the value of postoperative sustained peritoneal chemotherapy in prevention of relapse of Dukes C-stage colon cancer. Methods From Jun 1992 to Jun 2002, 102 patients after radical surgery of Dukes C-stage colon cancer were divided into groups at random. One group was treated with intravenous chemotherapy and another with sustained peritoneal chemotherapy. The side effects of chem- otherapy were observed. The 1- and 3- year survival rates and the 1- year tumor-free survival rates were ana- lyzed. Results The 1- and 3- year survival rates of the peritoneal chemotherapy group(94.2% ,78.8% ) were much higher than those of the intravenous chemotherapy group (92.0% ,58.0% ). The 1- year survival rate had no significant difference( P 〉 0.05) ,while the 3- year survival rate had significant difference( P 〈 0.05). The 1- year tumor-free survival rate of peritoneal chemotherapy group(90.4% ) was much higher than that of the intravenous chemotherapy group (74.0%), with significant difference ( P 〈 0.05 ). Conclusion Patients with Dukes C-stage colon cancer were adaptable to sustained peritoneal chemotherapy after radical operation, which reduced peritoneal metastasis rate and hepatic metastasis rate, and increased survival rate.
